5 Greatest Longhorns Traditions

  1. Bevo
Bevo, a live Texas Longhorn steer, is one of the most iconic mascots in football history. The beloved steer has been a Longhorn favorite since his first appearance in 1916.
  2. Hook ‘em Horns Signal
In a stadium dominated by burnt orange and white, the next thing you’ll notice is the Longhorn hand gesture saluted by fans, coaches, alums, and students.
  3. “The Eyes of Texas,” The Longhorn Band and “Texas Fight”
Before and after each game, 100,000 stadium fans sing and chant while hundreds of band members perform the school song. Big Bertha, the largest bass drum in the world, delivers loud booms whenever the team scores.
  4. The Largest Texas Flag
Measuring 75 feet by 125 feet, the massive state flag is run onto the field by UT’s Alpha Phi Omega fraternity. The flag, so big that it covers a big portion of the field, is a traditional UT football custom and can also be seen hanging from the President’s Balcony during rallies.
  5. Smokey the Cannon
Weighing in at 1,200 pounds, the cannon is fired at kick-off and each time Longhorns scores. The booms are a familiar sound to Texas fans.
